Huskies Maintain Winning Streak with Convincing Shutout Over Mavericks

TRIMONT — The Jackson County Central (JCC) volleyball team continued to impress as they extended their winning streak with a dominating performance against the Martin County West (MCW) Mavericks in Trimont, securing their fourth consecutive shutout victory.

In a match powered by the trio of Emma Haren, Kylee Wenzel, and Sawyer Flatgard, who collectively amassed 27 kills, and orchestrated by the skilled setting duo of Elese Paplow and Bailey Finck, the Huskies secured a comprehensive 25-19, 25-19, 25-14 nonconference sweep.

Head coach Deidre Wierson acknowledged, "We faced some challenges, including injuries and illnesses, leading to an unusual nine-match losing streak from September 16-23. Despite a setback during the Warehouse Showcase in Burnsville on September 22-23, where we faced formidable competition, we needed to rebuild our confidence and rhythm."

The Huskies achieved their mission. They notched 3-0 victories against Pipestone Area on September 28, St. James Area on October 2, and Luverne on October 5, and on Monday night, they added MCW to their list of triumphs.

Game 1 saw Flatgard's four-point service run giving the Huskies an early 5-2 lead, but the Mavericks, led by Emily Anderson, battled back to tie the score at 6-all. Haren's precise serving, combined with her powerful kills, reestablished a comfortable lead at 10-6. Haren ended the match connecting on 14 of 15 serves for 10 points.

In Game 2, Paplow, a volleyball commit to the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, swung the momentum in the Huskies' favor with a seven-point service run. Wenzel's thunderous kills were instrumental in maintaining their lead. The Huskies clinched the win despite a late surge from MCW.

Game 3 featured stellar performances from Paplow, Haren, and Hash in the service department, propelling the team to a commanding 17-5 advantage. Flatgard's decisive kill, set up by Finck, sealed the three-game sweep for JCC.

Haren led all hitters with 10 kills, while Wenzel and Flatgard contributed nine and eight spike-winners, respectively. Paplow's serving was flawless, connecting on all 18 attempts to tally a match-high 12 points.
