As the clock struck 1:23 a.m., the night sky above the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was calm and quiet. Within the control room, tension mounted as engineers prepared to carry out a routine test aimed at determining whether the plant's reactors could safely operate on backup electrical power in the event of a loss of external power supply. However, a series of unfortunate events and human errors were about to set in motion a chain of events that would lead to an unprecedented disaster.
To simulate a power outage, the operators had to disable key safety systems, including the emergency cooling mechanism. But little did they know that this test would push Reactor Number 4 beyond its limits. As the reactor's power output continued to drop, it reached an unstable state with dangerously high energy levels - eventually destabilizing the nuclear core.
Suddenly, a massive steam explosion blew the 1,000-tonne reactor lid off, spewing radioactive debris and releasing an immense plume of radioactive smoke into the air. The reactor's graphite moderator caught fire, further exacerbating the situation. Plant workers and first responders attempted to contain the growing disaster, unaware of the deadly radiation they were being exposed to.
News of the explosion spread quickly, and within hours the nearby city of Pripyat, home to the plant's workers and their families, was evacuated.
