What is an Promise Ring?

The History of Promise Rings
Brinkman claims that the idea of giving a ring for engagement as an expression of the love and affection of a person is several hundreds of years old. The custom of wearing rings to display dedication and loyalty goes back to the ancient times. There's evidence that Roman brides had engagement rings on their fingers in the second century BC. Posy rings with engravings of romantic poems, dating back to the 16th century of England and Acrostic rings -- which spell out words in gems - were popular in the Georgian and Victorian time periods. As an example, a ruby, emerald or garnet amethyst, ruby and diamond spells "regard" and diamond, emerald amethyst ruby, emerald amethyst, garnet sapphire, ruby and topaz spells "dearest".
Modern promise rings have only been rediscovered as a trend in the past decade or so because of the press coverage surrounding famous promise rings (like the Jonas Brothers and celeb couple Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth).
What's the design of a Promise Ring?
There are no rules or regulations regarding the type of rings. Seriously, there are no restrictions or rules in this case. Popular styles of promise rings and themes include hearts, an infinity symbol, or a design that is intertwined to signify a couple's love, Claddagh rings and eternity rings, and rings made of precious metal with the birthstone, mosaic or combination of stones. It could also be an ordinary band made of sterling silver or gold and engraving. Promise rings made of diamonds are popular, too, although they are usually a small carat size and are set in a row or row as opposed to the standard solitaire diamond engagement rings.
